Balance is one of the performance related components of fitness that refers to a person’s ability to maintain, control, and position their body relative to a changing environment. Physics suggests that requires voluntary maintenance of an individual’s center of gravity over their base of support.

Balance training is important because it improves our capacity to create stability in static (lacking change) and dynamic (constant change) environments and will also play a key role in injury prediction and injury prevention. Another important consideration for balance is the optimal muscle balance ratios with functional muscle pairs. Limitations in flexibility affect the length tension relationship in muscles that can diminish overall balance and coordination. Imbalanced muscles pairs also cause musculoskeletal deviations that can lead to aches and pains that commonly occur.

During the month of November we will devote sometime to incorporate balance testing and training with the intention of making improvements. Moving forward we will develop a focus for the month so that we as community can have common goals that we work on and toward. This upcoming week we will practice the star excursion balance test which requires us to stand on a single leg and tap the opposing leg at different sites within a tape star.
